LEARN ABOUT SCOUTING IN CANADA

April, 2007
Dear Brother Scouts,
My name is Jason and I am the Troop Scribe for Troop 173 from Yorktown, New York, U.S.A. I am writing to inform you of what has been happening down here.
Our yearly Klondike Derby was January 26-28 at Camp Smith, a military base. This was a different experience for us since we usually have this event only council-wide at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park as a day event. Anyways, one of our two sleds, the Red Flames Patrol, won first in the skills portion and second in the sled race. For the past few years we have won the skills portion and placed in the sled race.
From February 23-25, we had our other annual event, Cabin Camping. We had it at Clear Lake Scout Reservation in a 30-person cabin we rented. We went on a day hike, played outdoors, and played cards and chess. It was a ton of fun.
The most recent event we had was an Order of the Arrow election. This was our first one and we had some help from local OA members. We elected 4 from our troop into the OA. We hope to host an election every year from now on.
We just have a couple questions for you. Are there any differences in Boy Scouts up there? What events does your troop take part in? If you have any questions for us, we will be glad to answer them.
Yours in Scouting,
Troop 173
